The handbook gives candidates and mentors a practical structure for moving from CSTP self-assessment to an Individualized Learning Plan or growth goal, an inquiry cycle, evidence, reflection, and student impact. It is designed to complement existing program processes.
Use it as a formative coaching and reflection resource alongside your program's requirements. Candidates can identify a focused practice to develop, while coaches can use the same language to discuss evidence and next steps.
Three ways to use it
- Set a growth focus. Select one meaningful CSTP element and inquiry or ILP goal using the developmental descriptions.
- Guide mentor conversations. Compare observations, teacher reflection, and student evidence during existing check-ins.
- Reflect on impact. Revisit the goal after a practice change and decide what to try next for students.
One cycle in practice: A candidate selects CSTP 1D: Diversity and Equity, invites students to help shape a lesson discussion, tracks participation and short student responses, reviews whose voices were heard with a coach, and adjusts the next discussion using student feedback.
Six-week induction pilot

A suggested pilot for 8–12 candidates and their mentors or coaches fits within existing meetings. No changes to program requirements or additional meetings are required.
